Dexter and Me
Happy Monday, lovelies!
This post is about a topic that is very near and dear to my heart – Dexter. And in honor of National Pet Day, I wanted to share the story about how I became a “we”.
My life did change the day I brought Dexter home. But the biggest change of all came 5 months earlier. In August 2010, I found myself lost and confused. I had just ended a long term relationship and moved out on my own for the first time and I had just started my first full-time job out of graduate school. It was a stressful time and I was having difficulty trying to balance it all. Every time I thought about giving up though, I remembered why I started this journey. I needed to let go of all of the negativity in my life and learn how to stand up on my own two feet.
Dexter was just what I needed in my life. What made it even more special was that he chose me to be his mommy. He fell asleep in my arms the moment I held him at the breeder’s farm. From that day on, I became responsible for this little guy. His dependence on me for anything and everything gave me a renewed sense of purpose in life. And seeing his little tail wagging when I walk through the front door after a long day at the office makes the rest of my day – especially the tough ones – melt away. It’s like I’m in an indestructible bubble of happiness and nothing or no one can burst it. He’s been there for me through it all over the past 5 years – love, heartbreaks, job relocations, and illnesses – and all he asks for in return are snuggles, ear scratches, and chicken flavored Blue Buffalo bites.
Okay, so yeah, Dexter does wear a sweater. I know what you’re thinking – I’m one of those pet parents who dresses up their pet. This is the only article of clothing he has. And as adorable as it may be, it’s actually practical. His coat is wiry and fine so he does get cold when it’s chilly outside. It is kinda cute that we’re “matching” in this post with our sweaters though. But if anyone is going home to change, it’s him.
Have a great day!
