Black Is Beautiful
You can never be overdressed or under dressed in all black. Think about it. Whenever you’re going somewhere important, whether it be to a cocktail party, a board meeting, or brunch with your besties, 10 times out of 10 you choose to wear black. Why is that? Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy – but mysterious. Black is the ultimate power color. But most importantly, it’s universally flattering and looks good on everyone! I personally love black because it’s a great foundation for bold accessories. When you wear all black, it makes everything else in your outfit pop.
Saturday in NYC was a complete wash. Jonas passed through and dropped 28 inches of snow on my fair city within 24 hours. I was stuck in the house with Mr. Dexter watching Netflix and eating every carbohydrate I had stockpiled in my refrigerator and pantry. For someone like me who is constantly on the go, getting snowed in was torture. As soon as I was free to leave the house on Sunday, I immediately headed into the city for some much needed fresh air and to eat the biggest salad I could find. Given that it was still below freezing outside, my faux fur coat (I originally debuted it in my Fall Fashion in NYC post) was definitely going to get some use. For extra warmth, I wore my merino wool turtleneck and a thermal undershirt to make sure I was comfortable. I’m a Cali girl so I’m not used to the harsh east coast winters yet. I’d rather be safe than sorry.
I could have gone three ways with my denim color choice here: black, blue, or grey. I opted for my black ripped jeans because I thought they would be a great addition to the “rocker” vibe I had going on with my rain boots (more on those later). But no matter which color you choose to go with here – black, blue, or grey – you can’t go wrong. I wouldn’t really go with colored jeans this time because you want the coat to be your statement piece for this outfit. The style of jean is totally up to you. Flares would be really fun with some pointed toe boots and straight leg or boyfriend jeans would be great with a cuff or frayed hem and some ankle booties or pointed toe flats/loafers (or even sneakers).
Given the sheer amount of snow and the slushy aftermath, there were tons of snow piles and puddles that I had to walk through – and jump into. As much as I love my heels, I had to be realistic. If it hadn’t been so ugly outside though, I would have worn my black suede over the knee boots or my black ankle booties. I had bought my rain boots a few weeks earlier and had worn them only one other time before Sunday. I never really had to own rain boots when I lived in California because the weather never really got severe enough to warrant them. I opted for black because I wanted a pair that would go with everything. I can wear them to the office any day of the week or when I’m running all over town on weekends. They proved themselves in both rain and snow. I did not slip once and they are very well insulated. The matte rubber is beautiful on these boots because even though they’re rain boots, they don’t look like it. Also, the chain is removable so they can be dressed up or down. I leave the chain on 90 percent of the time because I like the edgier look.
Black Accessories
Normally, I get my hair done on Saturdays at Slique Hair Studio but Jonas put the kibosh on that. Therefore, my beanie served a dual purpose: warmth and camouflaging my bad hair day. The pom pom trend is in full effect and I for one love it – especially on beanies. I have beanies in every color because I find them to be the most flexible winter hat you can own. They can be dressed up or down and come in a variety of textures and shapes to suit your mood. I decided to carry my everyday tote because she holds everything – including half of the salad I had left over from lunch. The sun was shining bright so my sunglasses were definitely necessary and you can never go wrong with a bold, red lip (my favorite) with an all black outfit.
Have a great week, lovelies!
xoxo, CCB
